‘Hancock’s Quest’ by Kevin Patience – WMHG

Kevin Patience is the published author of several books and articles on the military and transport history of East Africa. This talk concerns a story which is an extraordinary naval saga. It was inspired by the discovery of the medals of Stoker James Hancock who was born in Devon but killed in September 1914 when the cruiser HMS Pegasus was sunk by the German commerce-raiding cruiser Konigsberg in Zanzibar in the early weeks of WW1. In this battle the captain of the Pegasus struck his colours and there was a subsequent cover-up by the Admiralty.
